Things to Do in Chautauqua

Chautauqua Park

Chautauqua Park is the heart of the neighborhood and one of Boulder’s most recognizable outdoor spaces. It sits at the base of the Flatirons, bringing together open green space, historic buildings, and direct trail access. It’s the perfect dreamy spot for bringing people together for events of all shapes and sizes.

You’ll see trail runners heading out early, families and friends spreading out blankets for afternoon picnics, and plenty of people who came for a walk and ended up exploring for hours longer than they planned.

The park is known for its wide, grassy lawns and unmatched views of the Flatirons. It rarely feels crowded, even when there’s a steady flow of people moving through the area. Historic cottages and a nearby auditorium add character, making the park feel rooted in Boulder’s past while still very much in use today.

Chautauqua Park also serves as a major access point to Boulder’s trail system, making it both a destination and a launch point. From here, multiple well-known routes branch directly into the Flatirons, including access to Bluebell Mesa Trail and routes leading to the First and Second Flatiron Trails. The trail network offers both short, scenic walks and more challenging climbs, which is why the park works perfectly for casual outings and serious hikes.

Tucked into the park itself is the Chautauqua General Store, a small but practical part of the experience. It’s an easy stop for water, snacks, or picnic essentials to really enjoy the park! The store makes it easier to stay longer without needing to leave the area, which fits naturally with the park’s slower, unhurried pace.

How to Enjoy It

Why We Love It

Did You Know?

The word "Chautauqua" originally comes from a movement in the late 1800s focused on adult education, outdoor recreation, and community enrichment—and this Boulder neighborhood continues to carry that spirit today.
The Colorado Chautauqua is the only continuously operating Chautauqua west of the Mississippi.
The entire neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
Several cottages in the neighborhood are available to rent and have no TVs or radios, by design.

Getting Around

While the neighborhood itself is best explored on foot or by bike, parking can get tight –  especially near trailheads. A seasonal Park-to-Park shuttle runs on summer weekends and is the easiest way to access Chautauqua Park. Within the neighborhood, expect calm streets, scenic sidewalks, and a quiet, residential feel.
