Boulder’s Best Live Music Venues
Boulder has a strong mix of historic theaters, small listening rooms, and casual bars that make live music accessible almost any night of the week. From local talent to national tours, here are the spots worth checking out.
Fox Theatre
Just off The Hill near CU Boulder, the Fox is an intimate venue with a loyal following. It’s known for high-energy shows and great sound. I’ve seen everything from jam bands and hip-hop to indie and funk here.
Boulder Theater
Located downtown, this art deco venue brings in a wide variety of acts. It’s one of the most versatile venues in town, hosting national tours, film nights, comedy, and local showcases.
eTown Hall
This small venue doubles as a recording studio for the nationally syndicated eTown radio show. It’s a quiet, respectful space perfect for acoustic sets, folk artists, and singer-songwriters.
The Velvet Elk Lounge
Tucked downtown, this spot leans more toward local and regional acts. It’s casual, with a moody vibe and good cocktails—ideal for a laid-back night with live music.
Chautauqua Auditorium
Set at the base of the Flatirons, this all-wood, open-air venue has a rustic charm. It’s seasonal and hosts a wide range of acoustic, jazz, and classical performances in one of Boulder’s most scenic spots.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre
My favorite venue, technically in Morrison, is just under 40 minutes from Boulder. Red Rocks is one of the most iconic music venues in the world. Carved into natural sandstone formations, the sound and setting are unmatched. Major artists from all genres play here. I would highly recommend seeing a show at Red Rocks, it’s a must-do for any music fan in the area.

Folsom Field Concerts
While it’s best known as the home of CU Boulder football, Folsom Field also transforms into a massive outdoor concert venue for select major events. With the Flatirons as a backdrop and room for tens of thousands of fans, it’s one of the most impressive live music experiences in town.
Over the years, Folsom Field has hosted artists like The Grateful Dead, Dead & Company, Phish, and other huge acts. Shows here are less frequent, but when they happen, it’s a big deal. When I saw Phish here in early July, I was super impressed by the scale, energy, and open-air setting, which made it a memorable spot for catching a live show.
If a major band is coming through Boulder, this is usually where it happens.
