Colorado Music Festival is one of Boulder’s favorite summer traditions, bringing live classical music performances to the community each year at Chautauqua Auditorium from July through August, with concerts, special events, and memorable performances for visitors and locals alike.
This year is even more special as the festival celebrates its 50th anniversary season. Since opening on July 9, the festival has already welcomed audiences to memorable performances, and as of July 21, there are still plenty of concerts and anniversary events to enjoy through August.
If you’re thinking about attending this summer, here’s everything you need to know before you go, along with a few local tips to help you make the most of your visit.
What Is the Colorado Music Festival?
The Colorado Music Festival is one of Boulder’s signature summer traditions, bringing world-class musicians to the historic Chautauqua Auditorium every July and August. Founded in 1976, it has grown into one of North America’s leading classical music festivals, attracting acclaimed conductors, soloists, and professional musicians from top orchestras across the United States and Canada.
This year’s season is especially meaningful because it marks the festival’s 50th anniversary. From July 9 through August 9, 2026, audiences can enjoy a month of orchestral concerts, chamber performances, world premieres, and community events in one of Boulder’s most iconic settings.
Here’s what makes the Colorado Music Festival stand out:
- 50th Anniversary Season: Celebrating five decades of music, community, and cultural tradition in Boulder.
- World-Class Performers: More than 100 professional musicians join acclaimed guest artists and conductors throughout the season.
- Special Anniversary Programming: The 2026 lineup includes three orchestral world premieres and an all-American program honoring the United States’ 250th anniversary.
- Historic Venue: Every performance takes place at Chautauqua Auditorium, a National Historic Landmark known for its natural acoustics and unforgettable Flatirons backdrop.
One of the things I have always appreciated about the Colorado Music Festival is that it never feels exclusive or intimidating. You do not have to be a lifelong classical music fan to enjoy an evening here. Spend the afternoon exploring Chautauqua Park, have dinner nearby, then settle into the auditorium as the sun begins to set behind the Flatirons. It is one of those Boulder experiences that feels just as memorable as the music itself.
Why Is the Colorado Music Festival So Special?
The Colorado Music Festival has always been about more than the music. It is the combination of world-class performances, the historic Chautauqua Auditorium, and the backdrop of the Flatirons that makes every concert feel like a true Boulder experience.
This milestone season brings together celebrated classical works, world premieres, and internationally acclaimed guest artists, making this one of the best years to experience the festival. Whether you are a longtime fan or attending for the first time, it is easy to see why so many people return year after year.
For me, that is what makes the festival special. You can spend the afternoon exploring Chautauqua Park, grab dinner nearby, and end the day with an incredible performance in one of Colorado’s most iconic venues. It is the kind of evening that captures everything people love about summer in Boulder.
What Can You Expect During the Colorado Music Festival 2026?
The 50th anniversary season is already well underway, and the opening weeks have set the tone for another memorable summer at Chautauqua. Audiences have already enjoyed standout performances, including 15-year-old violin sensation Himari performing Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, Yuja Wang’s highly anticipated festival debut, the annual Free Family Day featuring Peter and the Wolf, and a performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.
If you’re planning to visit after July 21, there is still plenty to look forward to.
| Date | Performance Highlights |
|---|---|
| July 21 | World premiere of James Stephenson's Love Notes, featuring principal trumpet Jeffrey Work, alongside Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence. |
| July 23 & 24 | An all-American program celebrating the United States' 250th anniversary with music by Copland, Gershwin, John Corigliano, Ron Nelson, and Cindy McTee. |
| July 30 & 31 | World premiere by Boulder composer Leigha Amick, followed by Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Holst's The Planets. |
| August 2 | Copland's Clarinet Concerto, Rossini's Introduction, Theme and Variations, and Ravel's Ma mère l'oye. |
| August 4 | The Danish String Quartet returns with works by Mozart, Shostakovich, and Ravel. |
| August 6 & 7 | The Colorado premiere of Valerie Coleman's new piano concerto, paired with Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. |
| August 9 | The season concludes with Mahler's powerful Symphony No. 3. |
One thing I enjoy about this festival is that no two weeks feel the same. If you’re only able to attend one performance, I’d recommend looking at the late July or early August concerts, when the anniversary programming really comes together.
Whether you’re drawn to a world premiere, a celebrated guest artist, or a timeless classical masterpiece, there are still plenty of opportunities to experience this milestone season before it wraps up in August.
How Do You Plan Your Visit to the Colorado Music Festival?
A little planning can make your evening at the Colorado Music Festival even more enjoyable. From getting to Chautauqua to knowing what to bring, here are a few things worth keeping in mind before you head out.
Tickets
Tickets for the 2026 season range from $31 to $113, with $10 tickets available for youth ages 18 and under and students with valid school identification. You can purchase tickets through the Colorado Music Festival website or by contacting the Chautauqua Box Office.
Getting to Chautauqua
Parking around Chautauqua can fill up quickly, especially on concert nights. If you would rather skip the search for a parking space, the free Hop 2 Chautauqua shuttle is one of the easiest ways to get there. It begins running 90 minutes before most performances and stops at several convenient locations, including the RTD Bus Station, Pearl Street, and the Broadway Park and Ride.
If you are using a rideshare service, plan to be dropped off near the Chautauqua Dining Hall, followed by a short walk to the auditorium.
What Should You Bring?
Because Chautauqua Auditorium relies on natural ventilation, evenings can cool down after sunset, even during the middle of summer. I usually recommend bringing a light jacket along with a reusable water bottle.
You are also welcome to bring items such as blankets, binoculars, small seat cushions, and a soft-sided bag that fits beneath your seat. If you arrive early enough, consider stopping by the Talk Under the Tent program before select evening performances. It is a great way to learn more about the music you’ll hear that night.
What Else Can You Do Before or After a Concert?
One of the best things about attending the Colorado Music Festival is that the concert can easily become part of a full day in Boulder. Chautauqua sits at the base of the Flatirons, so you’re only minutes away from some of the city’s best trails, restaurants, and local attractions.
If you have a few hours before the performance, take a walk through Chautauqua Park or explore one of the nearby hiking trails. Even a short stroll offers some of the best views in Boulder and is a great way to slow down before the evening begins.
If you prefer a more relaxed afternoon, stop by the Chautauqua Dining Hall for dinner or grab a coffee or ice cream from the General Store. Both are just a short walk from the auditorium, making them convenient options before the concert.
If you’re visiting from out of town, it’s also worth spending some time on Pearl Street Mall before heading to Chautauqua. The local shops, restaurants, and street performers capture a different side of Boulder and pair nicely with an evening of live music.
Is the Colorado Music Festival Worth Attending?
Absolutely. If you’re looking for one event that captures the spirit of a Boulder summer, the Colorado Music Festival is hard to beat.
You do not have to be a classical music enthusiast to enjoy it. Between the talented musicians, the historic Chautauqua Auditorium, and the incredible setting beneath the Flatirons, the experience is about much more than the music. It is one of those evenings that simply feels like Boulder.
The 50th anniversary season makes this year an especially memorable time to attend. Whether you’re catching a world premiere, hearing a favorite composer performed live, or introducing someone to the festival for the first time, there is something for just about everyone.
If you’re visiting Boulder this summer, I’d definitely recommend setting aside an evening for the festival. Pair it with a walk through Chautauqua Park or dinner nearby, and you’ll experience one of the city’s longest-running traditions at its best.

The Colorado Music Festival’s 50th anniversary season is a wonderful reminder of why Boulder has become such a special place for music, arts, and community. Even though the season is already underway, there are still plenty of incredible performances to enjoy before it wraps up in August.
If you’re planning to attend, give yourself a little extra time to explore Chautauqua, take in the views of the Flatirons, and enjoy one of Boulder’s favorite summer traditions.
