What Are the Rules at Boulder Dog Parks?
Dog parks are an incredible resource, but they only stay enjoyable if everyone does their part. A little courtesy and awareness go a long way in making sure every pup (and their human!) has a great experience.
- Know the Rules – Each park has specific guidelines on leash requirements, designated off-leash areas, and permits like Boulders Voice and Sight Tag. Follow them to keep things safe.
- Pick Up After Your Dog – No one wants to step into an unexpected mess. Always bring waste bags and dispose of them properly.
- Monitor Your Dog’s Behavior – Some dogs are social butterflies, while others need more personal space. Be mindful of body language and intervene if play gets too rough.
- Bring the Essentials – Pack water, a leash, and towels (especially for swim parks) to make the visit more comfortable.
- Respect Other Park Users – Not everyone loves dogs (hard to believe, we know). Be mindful of joggers, bikers, and other park visitors sharing the space.
A little preparation and common sense go a long way in making sure the dog parks remain space, fun, and welcoming for everyone!
What is Boulder's Voice & Sight Tag Program?
If you’ve spent time at Boulder’s off-leash trails, you’ve probably heard about the Voice & Sight Tag Program. This permit allows responsible dog owners to have their dogs off-leash in designated open space areas, as long as they remain under voice and sight control at all times.
Why? This helps balance off-leash recreation with conservation efforts, ensuring dogs can roam freely without disturbing wildlife, habitats, or other visitors.
How does it work?
To qualify for a Voice & Sight Tag, dog owners must:
- Complete an online training session about responsible dog handling and Boulder’s off-leash rules.
- Register their dog(s) with the city and purchase a Voice & Sight Tag, which must be visibly worn while using the designated areas.
- Ensure their dog responds immediately to verbal commands and stays within sight at all times.
Where Can You Use It?
Not all open space trails allow off-leash dogs, but many popular spots, including Chautauqua, Marshall Mesa, and Doudy Draw, have Voice and Sight Tag-approved areas. Always check trailhead signs or Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks website for up-to-date regulations
