I’ve always thought Boulder had the kind of creative, outdoorsy energy that makes it stand out, and now with the Sundance Film Festival officially relocating here in 2027, it feels like a perfect match. If you’re searching for the best things to do in Boulder during Sundance Film Festival, you’re in for more than just screenings.
From scenic trails to vibrant local spots, I can tell you from experience that Boulder has far more to offer than most visitors expect. It rewards anyone willing to explore a little deeper.
Boulder During Sundance 2027: Things to Do and See
Start Your Morning on Pearl Street Mall
Before any screening, Pearl Street Mall is the kind of place that sets the whole tone for your day. It is an outdoor pedestrian mall running through the heart of downtown Boulder, lined with locally owned shops, coffee spots, street performers, and restaurants that have been staples of this city for decades.
Grab a coffee, sit outside if the weather cooperates, and just soak it in.
Pearl Street has this easy, unhurried energy that feels completely removed from any festival buzz happening nearby, and that contrast is actually wonderful. It is one of the most recommended things to do in Boulder, Colorado, for good reason.
Hike the Flatirons Before Your First Film
If you are visiting Boulder during Sundance and you do not at least walk toward the Flatirons, you have missed something essential about this city.
The iconic rock formations rising above town are visible from almost everywhere, but getting up close at Chautauqua Park is a different experience entirely.
The trails range from easy walks to more serious hikes, so there is something here no matter your fitness level. Going early in the morning before the screenings start means you beat the crowds and get those views largely to yourself. This is genuinely one of the best things to do in Boulder that requires nothing more than a good pair of shoes.
Explore the Hill Neighborhood
The Hill sits right next to the University of Colorado campus and has a character all its own. It is a little grittier, a little more eclectic, and full of spots that feel authentically Boulder rather than polished for tourists.
During the Sundance Film Festival in Boulder, this neighborhood is likely to have its own energy, with younger crowds, live music spilling out of venues, and plenty of affordable food options. It is a great area to wander between events without feeling like you need a plan.
Eat Well, Because Boulder Takes Food Seriously
One of the genuinely exciting things to do in Boulder during Sundance is simply eating well. Boulder has a food scene that punches well above its size. There are fantastic Mexican restaurants, farm-to-table spots, excellent ramen, creative brunch places, and some of the best coffee in Colorado.
Because this is a festival visit, you probably will not have time to eat everywhere, so it helps to think ahead. A few places worth knowing:
Check Out Boulder's Independent Bookstores
This might sound like a small thing, but Boulder’s bookstores are genuinely wonderful, and they feel very aligned with the spirit of Sundance. Independent films attract readers, and Boulder’s book scene attracts exactly the kind of thoughtful, curious people who make great conversation between screenings.
Boulder Book Store on Pearl Street is the anchor here, a proper independent with a broad selection and a layout that makes browsing feel like an event in itself. It is one of the underrated experiences in Boulder, Colorado, that visitors consistently mention after they leave.
Visit the Boulder Farmers Market
If your visit falls on a Wednesday or Saturday between April and November, the Boulder Farmers Market is absolutely worth building into your morning. It runs along 13th Street near Central Park and draws local vendors, food producers, and artisans from across the region.
It is lively, it smells incredible, and it gives you a very grounded sense of who actually lives in this city.
Picking up something to snack on while walking through is one of the small pleasures of a Boulder visit that does not cost much and stays with you.
Take a Drive Up Boulder Canyon
Boulder sits right at the edge of the Rockies, which means dramatic mountain scenery is genuinely minutes from downtown. Boulder Canyon Drive follows Boulder Creek west into the mountains, and even a short drive in that direction is worth doing. This kind of spontaneous side trip is one of the best things to do in Boulder, Colorado, when you have a free afternoon and want something memorable.
If you want to go further, Nederland is about 45 minutes up the canyon and has its own quirky small-town personality.
Catch Live Music in the Evening
Boulder has a real live music culture, particularly around venues like the Fox Theatre and the Boulder Theater. During the Sundance Film Festival period, you can expect programming around these venues to reflect the creative energy of the festival.
Even if a specific show is not on your radar, checking what is playing during your visit is always worthwhile. Boulder’s music scene skews eclectic and tends to feature artists you will be glad you discovered.
Pairing a film screening with a live show in the same evening is a very Boulder kind of night out.
Spend Time at the CU Art Museum
The University of Colorado Boulder has an art museum on campus that is free to visit and consistently well-curated. But it is a meaningful hour or two, and it is one of those things to do in Boulder during Sundance that fits quietly into any itinerary without demanding too much.
During a film festival, being surrounded by other creative work feels natural and often adds something to how you process the films you are seeing.
It is not a huge museum, so it is not a full-day commitment.
Wrapping Up
There’s something about Boulder that stays with you, it’s not just the mountain views or the creative energy, but the way everything here feels a little more intentional and unhurried. During the Festival, that feeling only deepens, as the city fills with stories, ideas, and people who are just as curious as you are.
If you’re thinking about what to explore in Boulder during the Sundance Film Festival, the real experience goes beyond any single plan or itinerary. It’s in the early morning walks, the unexpected discoveries between screenings, and the simple moments that make you pause and take it all in.
Take your time here. Wander a little. And let Boulder show you why it’s more than just a festival destination, it’s a place you’ll remember long after the credits roll.
