Flagstaff Road
Flagstaff Road is one of the most iconic road biking routes in Boulder. The climb begins just west of downtown and features steep switchbacks, steady elevation gain, and rewarding views over the city. If you’re looking for a classic Boulder cycling experience, this is the ride to do.
Lefthand Canyon to Ward
Lefthand Canyon offers a longer, more gradual climb through beautiful mountain scenery before reaching the small town of Ward. I usually stop here for water and a snack before heading back. It’s a favorite route for endurance rides thanks to its consistent grade and lighter traffic.
Jamestown
The ride to Jamestown combines rolling roads with a manageable climb, making it a great choice for intermediate cyclists. Once you reach town, the general store is a popular place to grab a quick bite before the descent back toward Boulder.
NCAR Hill
NCAR Hill is a shorter climb that’s popular with local cyclists for training rides and interval sessions. While the ascent is brief, the views from the top make the effort worthwhile.
Peak to Peak Highway (via Nederland)
If you’re planning a longer ride, head through Boulder Canyon to Nederland before continuing onto the Peak to Peak Highway. This route features long climbs, sweeping mountain views, and an unforgettable road cycling experience. Be prepared for changing weather and carry plenty of water and nutrition for the ride.

When Is the Best Time for Road Biking in Boulder?
- Spring (April–May): Lower elevation roads are rideable, but higher routes may still have snow or debris. Mornings can be pretty chilly so pack your thermals.
Summer (June–August): Ideal conditions for a good ride. Early morning starts help for avoiding traffic and heat.
Fall (September–October): Crisp air and golden leaves make for stunning rides. One of my personal favorite times to ride in Boulder.
Winter (November–March): Depends on the weather. Some low roads stay clear, but watch for ice and fast-changing conditions. Many locals make the switch to fat biking during the winter, Boulder keeps some lower trails open which keeps winter biking accessible.

Road Biking Tips for Boulder Weather and Elevation

Mountain weather can change quickly, especially on routes that climb into the foothills. Pack a lightweight windbreaker, start early during the summer to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, and always check the forecast before tackling higher-elevation rides.
